Census Tax Records Land Lotteries Newsome and Misc. Info

1820 Census: Shows Sarah Sneed, 10 people in household, and Ansel Sneed, older folks with 4 people in household. I have not got a fix on the location of these households.

1830 census: Sarah Sneed, now with 4 people in household. What happened to the other six, I cannot tell. She has two boys of 15-20, one from 20-30. Her own tally is a bit on the young side. The other Sneed is William, who turns out to be one of the settlers of Tinneville, and the son of Anderson Sneed. Living in tax district #90, Woods' district.

Notes: I have now ascertained by use of Wash Co. tax records and land lottery records that Sarah Sneed and Ansel Sneed both live in the 97th district in the decade of the 1820s--Floyds' district.

Book: 975.8 R2h 1967 Reprint of Georgia Land Lottery of 1827.
This book is a reprint of the results of the 1827 land lottery that parceled out (1) Lee, (2) Muscogee, (3) Troup, (4) Coweta, (5) Carroll counties.
The following findings:
Pg. 87--Sarah Sneed, widow, Floyds' dist--draws 163 Dt 3 Sec 3-- (Troup co.)
Pg.198--Sherrard Sneed, Floyd's--draws 139 Dt.25 Sec 1
Pg.128--William Webb, Woods--220 Dt 23 Sec 1
Pg.198--A.H. Sneed, soldier, Wilkes--(Archibald h.)
Pg. 33--Leaston Sneed, Burke, Corker's
Pg. 82 More in Corker's
Pg. 25-- Patrick H. Sneed, Richmond
Pg.106--Ansel Sneed's orphans, Floyds, 210, 7 section 5(carroll Co.)
Wahington County conclusions thus far (August 15, 1990):

We know that Sarah Sneed is head of household in 1820, and that Ansel Sneed is also a head of household. They are the only two Sneed households listed in that census.

Neither Sarah nor Ansel show up in the Tax digest of 1825. Sarah must have no property (pays no poll tax because of her sex). Also, there must be no people of voting age with the Sneed surname in her household. I must assume that Ansel was dead by this time.

Sarah appears on the tax rolls for the first time in 1828, owning land in Troup County and appears as agent for two Sneed children who own land in Carroll county. The Land lottery record shows Sarah as drawing land in Troup county, and Ansel Sneed's orphans drawing land in Carroll county soon thereafter.

The conclusion must be, then, that Sarah Sneed is acting as agent for Ansel Sneed's kids. Therefore, I am assuming that Seaborn is actually the son of Ansel Sneed.

Problems: The listing in 1828 is "S. and B. Sneed". In 1836, the names are written Seabern, Boling G. and Sarah. There is a possibility that S. Sneed is not Seaborn and that this is a coincidence. I don't believe this to be true. I believe that S. Sneed is Seaborn.

Ansel's 1820 census entry shows no children who would be minors in 1827. Sarah has 10 people living in her house, 3 of the boys under ten. Who was Sarah? Sister to Ansel? Sister in law? Was she taking care of his children already by 1820? Where was his wife? Is one of the two women indicated on the census his wife? Was she ill? Where did Ansel come from? Why the close link between Webbs and Sneeds? Are the Tenniville Sneeds related to the Sandersville ones?

Who is Sherod Sneed? He doesn't appear on any census I have checked so far, including the 1830 one--which he should as he shows up in the tax lists before and after that date. Unless he moved or died early in that year (his tax default year).

Other notes: Garnered from Sneed Microfische SLC, letters from Jim Sneed, etc.

Anderson Sneed born c. 1785-90. Died 3 March, 1848 in Jefferson County, Fla. Owned land on the Oohoopi bordering a Kennedy (James). (Kennedys are on page 141 of the 1820 census. Married Hetta Sanders (Jim Sneed, Jan. '89 letter).

Received land grant, lottery of 1805 (P38, Records of Wash co.)975.8672 R2d. Had a son, Anderson Sneed who moved to Fla with him and I've got stuff on that family.

Anderson's brother, Charles, (Newsletter) owned land in Wash county (see above). Wife and six kids. Awarded land in Washington co. in 1797--200 acres. Head right for Charles Sneeed in 1794(?), for Dudly Sneed in 1785.
