Lucy Long and the Swanzey-Swancey-Swanzy-Swancy-Anderson Connection

genealogy main page

This is concerning the Swancey/Swanzy/Swanzey/Swancy family’s ties to the Andersons, the John Read Longs, and the James Longs.

It takes some time to tease out the various neighborhoods and relationships but the way it falls out in my book is:

Lucy Long Anderson, dtr of Walter Anderson married John Wilson Swancey

Lucy Long, dtr of John Read Long married Dr. Samuel Swanzey

Lucy Long dtr of James Long married Richard L. Anderson, brother of Lucy Long Anderson. In doing this, Lucy Long because Lucy Long Anderson also.

And these were not the only Lucy Longs in the neighborhood. There were daughters and nieces and cousins, too.

 The Samuel Swanzey family:

Lucy who married Dr. Swanzey had died by 1819, which is when we find the will of her father, John Read Long. I had thought, then, that she had died first, having seen that the partition of her husband’s estate happened in about 1822. But his actual estate was administered in 1817.

The 1800 census has both parents enumerated as 16-25 with no children, born, then, 1775-1784.   The 1810 census has both parents pegged at 26-44. But if we factor in the 1800 census, they’d be 26-35 – still born between 1775 – 1784.

One document dated 1818 states that Rosanna, Eliza Caroline, Mary Martha, Louiza Lucy Swanzy, are minors under 14 years. Thus, the oldest of these was born by 1804, and the youngest by 1818. Sarah Ann and Robert were minors OVER the age of 14, suggesting that one of them could have been born as early as 1798. Except for the fact that, in 1800, there were no children.

So the marriage seems to have happened in around 1800.

[It has been suggested that Sarah Ann Long was the sister who married Dr. Swanzey, but John R. Long had no daughter, Sarah Ann. He and a Sarah Ann Swanzey execute a note to James Swanzey, the admin of Samuel, who appears to be his brother – but they are the father-in-law and his granddaughter. Later, Sarah Ann marries, or so it appears (I haven’t done a lot of lateral research on this line), William Turner.]

Dr. Samuel had a daughter named Louisa Lucy Swancey who is sometimes mistaken for two girls. Sometimes she is referred to as Lucy L.

The Anderson Family (James Long): Richard L (probably Long) Anderson, son of Walter Anderson and brother of Lucy Long Anderson, married Lucy Long, daughter of James Long. Richard’s birth date is established by the family bible record, 1 June 1779. His Lucy is listed in the 1850 census of that county and is said to have been born about 1775

The John Wilson Swancey family (probably brother of Dr. Samuel):

He married the sister of Richard L Anderson, Lucy Long Anderson, dtr of. Walter Anderson, born in 1783, as established by the bible record.

Records:

Here are the basic records needed in deciphering the Lucy girls. I may have included this in my Anderson notes. Or maybe not. I’m only doing this page now because someone messed with my lines on Family Search – merging without first checking with the submitter or reading the sources. And then I had to go back through and remember all this, figured out first long ago.

She died in Aug 1836, leaving 4 daughters: Mary (md. Lewis Busby), Mahala (md. Matthew H. Bryson – Alabama), Rhoda (md. William Sanders Pontotoc County Miss), Eliza Ann (md. Thomas W. Brooks – Abbeville). This complaint has to do with Benjamin’s aunt Rhoda Pulliam (she was a Pulliam who married James Pulliam) who died without issue and who evidently promised a slave, Leah, to the four girls. Leah lived with them, but went back to Rhoda for one of many stated and suggested reasons. Lucy died, they married, rhoda died – now they want Leah and her many children.

Hodges, gdn of two boys. This is a complaint that these two boys should have part in their grandfather’s estate by claim of their father. It is quite long and convoluted: Robert Swanzy (Swancy, Swanzey, etc), in 1774 had been possessed of 130 acres on the Saluda and a valulable ferry called Swancey’s Ferry. Wanted to move to Virginia and agreed with Sylvann? Wacker (a liar) to swap properties for land in Greenbrier Co VA. Got there and found no such land. Stayed a year, and was going to move back, but he died, Testate. His widow, Rosanna, with John, went back to SC, won back their property then returned to VA for the rest of the fam.
